Overview

RES is currently accepting applications for a Engineer/Designer IV in its Nashville, TN, Athens, GA, or Macon, GA offices. Work associated with this position will primarily occur within Georgia and Tennessee.

 

The Engineer/Designer IV will facilitate and oversee activities of engineers and design staff engaged in planning, designing, and implementing restoration projects. The ideal candidate would be recognized as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in ecosystem restoration. You can expect to implement innovative solutions on challenging restoration projects, lead technical discussions when interacting with multi-disciplinary staff and regulatory agencies, and mentoring junior staff. While staff management is not required, this position may create an opportunity for personnel management if desired. This individual will be responsible for overseeing the design and construction of a diverse set of restoration projects through delegation and collaboration with a dynamic ecosystem restoration team within the Southeast.

What your day-to-day might look like?

25% of your time will consist of Fieldwork, where you will be performing geomorphic, biological, and ecological site assessments, fulfilling mitigation crediting field protocols, and applying fluvial geomorphic/hydraulic surveys.

You will also be visiting our project sites where you will be performing construction oversight and post-construction monitoring – please be ready to travel occasionally and to stay overnight when working on our project sites!

25% of your time will consist of mentoring junior engineering and design staff related to the restoration design process

50% of your time will consist of design and technical production, including quality control of deliverables. You will develop design metrics and parameters into a 3-dimensional design with the Autodesk Civil 3D environment and oversee design staff production. You will then assist the team in AutoCAD plan production to develop preliminary, final, and construction restoration plan sets.

We may also require assistance with proposals, compilation of regulatory permit applications, and post-construction monitoring reports. You will also be processing data for mitigation crediting calculations purposes and help out with cost estimates and construction specifications for the projects.

The desired candidate’s responsibilities would include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading multiple teams of diverse disciplines;
  • Production of complex ecosystem restoration plan sets;
  • Mentoring junior staff and QA/QC of deliverables produced by others;
  • Ensuring compliance with pertinent regulations and laws including Section 401/404 of the Clean Water Act;
  • Field work, site surveys and construction oversight;
  • Management of the creation of stormwater, stream, and wetland restoration design documents including soil erosion/sedimentation control plans and post-construction stormwater plans;
  • Writing technical reports/memos for in-house and external distribution.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of applicable stream & wetland restoration design experience, and is considered by the industry to be an SME;
  • B.S. in an engineering or natural science field (such as but not limited to agricultural engineering, environmental engineering, water resources engineering, civil engineering, ecology, landscape architecture, geomorphology/geology/geography, or natural resources engineering);
  • Stormwater management design experience with a preference for nature-based solutions;
  • Fundamental understanding of watershed hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, stream hydraulics, sediment transport, and stream/wetland assessment and delineation;
  • Construction oversight experience for natural resource projects;
  • Ability to lead production of construction design plans & specifications, soil erosion and sedimentation control plans, post-construction stormwater plans, and site restoration plans;
  • Superior written and oral communication skills. Ability to not only produce accurate construction documents, but also explain to a variety of audiences with varying technical understanding why particular design approaches are relevant;
  • Ability to effectively focus on a variety of tasks, prioritize tasks, and utilize staff to produce quality results within deadlines;
  • Ability to travel occasionally to meetings, project sites or offices as needed (overnight stays will be necessary in some instances);
  • Acceptable driving record.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineering (PE) certification desired but not required if candidate possesses suitable stream & wetland design experience;
  • Master’s degree in a related field;
  • Experience leading floodplain analyses, hydraulic and hydrology (H/H) investigation, groundwater hydrology, as well as stream and wetland biological functionality;
